History

Grown from Excellence.

The University of Calabar grew out of the Calabar campus of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, which began functioning during the 1973/74 academic session. In April 1975, the Federal Military Government of Nigeria announced that the Calabar campus would become a full-fledged university.

Established as one of the seven premier institutions to meet the rising demand for higher education, UNICAL began its academic journey in October 1976. Since then, it has evolved into a comprehensive institution, expanding from three initial faculties to over fifteen, all dedicated to our motto: "Knowledge for Service."
